Harding and the Thoreau Society
Subject
The topic of the resource
As a founding member of the Thoreau Society whose passion and perseverance made the group a reality, Walter Harding was a core part of the oldest society devoted to the study of an American author. He served as secretary from 1941-1991 and was instrumental in the organization and publication of the Thoreau Society Bulletin, which incorporated the Thoreau-related work of many different scholars as well as that of Harding himself. The Bulletin served as an outlet for his thoughts and insights on Thoreau, and gave him a chance to share his enthusiasm with like-minded individuals nationwide.

Title

A Tribute to Walter Harding
Subject
The topic of the resource
A long, descriptive, and heartfelt obituary detailing the enormous influence Harding had on the Thoreau Society, and Harding's personal search for Thoreau.
Description
An account of the resource
The mature and aesthetic appearance of this modern publication of the Thoreau Society Bulletin is a far cry from the simple type-written affair which Harding produced, but the Society is clearly still in touch with its roots. This article speaks to how central Harding was to it, and notes his considerable academic accomplishments and progress in the field of Thoreauvian study, but the most moving sentiment is the focus on the personal relationships Harding still maintained within the Society.
