Dr. Walter Harding received a fellowship from the American Couincil of Leaerned Societies to continue his resear on Henry David Thoreau during his year-long sabbatical. His researech primarly focused on a biography centered around Thoreau. Only 53 applicants received a fellowship; Walter Harding was the only professor from a SUNY university.
Dr. Harding's obituary written by students from SUNY Geneseo's The Lamron. Harding passed away on April 10, 1996. In the article, Harding's accompishments are recognized. He published over 25 books, was a founding father of the Thoreau Society, and was given the honorary titles of University Professor in 1966 and Distinguished Professor in 1973 by the SUNY system.
SUNY Geneseo's student-run newspaper, The Lamron, Walter Harding is being recognized for his biographical writing of Henry David Thoreau. Interestingly, "the book is dedicated to 'Martin Luther King, Jr. and Edwin Way Teale, who, although they led widely dsparate lives, have both found inspiration in Henry David Thoreau.'"
In this newspaper clipping, Dr. Walter Harding was awarded $750 by the 'Research Foundation of the State University of New York.' Harding used the grant money to "complete and annoted edition of Thoreau's Walden."
